Fatal Accident in Ebonyi Claims Five Lives, Leaves 12 Hurt

A devastating road crash has occurred along the Nkalagu axis of the Enugu–Abakaliki Federal Highway in Ebonyi State, resulting in the loss of five lives and injuring 12 others.

The accident, which was confirmed by Daniel Asanya, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State, involved a lone commercial bus that crashed at Edema Bridge in Nkalagu, Ishielu Local Government Area.

The bus, a Toyota Hiace with registration number RSH 231 XE, was travelling from Abakaliki to Enugu when the incident occurred, and it was carrying a total of 17 passengers, including 12 males, four females, and one female child.

According to Asanya, the crash claimed the lives of four male passengers and a female child, while the remaining 12 passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The FRSC commander attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed, highlighting the importance of caution on the roads.

Among the items recovered from the scene of the accident were three mobile phones, personal belongings contained in two sack bags, and a quarter bag of rice.

The injured victims were rushed to Annunciation Hospital, Emene, Enugu State, for medical treatment, while the deceased were taken to a morgue for deposit.

Daniel Asanya urged motorists to exercise caution while driving, particularly on sections of the Enugu–Abakaliki Highway that are currently under construction and maintenance.

Asanya also called on the construction company handling the road project to provide adequate warning and reflective signs to alert motorists to the ongoing work and enhance road safety.
