Fake N5,000 note circulating with Tinubu's image is not genuine, says Central Bank

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has categorically denied the authenticity of a widely circulated image purporting to show a newly introduced N5,000 banknote, labeling it as entirely false.

This image, which quickly gained traction on social media platforms, was disseminated by users who claimed that the CBN had unveiled a sample of a N5,000 note bearing the likeness of President Bola Tinubu.

The emergence of this claim prompted a flurry of online discussions, with numerous users weighing in on the legitimacy of the purported new currency design, sparking a heated debate.

In a swift response, the CBN took to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle to debunk the report, issuing a clear statement that read, “This content is fake, and we urge the public to exercise caution and be guided accordingly.

In a similar incident in 2025, the CBN had also refuted claims that it had introduced N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes to facilitate smoother cash transactions, describing the report as completely false at the time.
