Explosive attack warnings prompt heightened vigilance in Northeast region

The Joint Task Force has issued a warning for heightened vigilance across the North East region due to an increased risk of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist attacks, particularly those involving suicide bombers.

Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, released this advisory on Tuesday, in response to multiple attacks that occurred in Maiduguri on Monday evening.

Those attacks targeted high-traffic areas, including Monday Market, the Post Office, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, resulting in casualties and underscoring the terrorists' ongoing intent to target crowded civilian areas.

According to Uba, terrorist groups often escalate their attacks during significant religious periods, such as the 27th and 29th days of Ramadan, when public gathering points like mosques, markets, and hospitals experience increased activity.

Uba urged the public to remain vigilant and security-conscious, especially during this time, and to exercise caution when attending night prayers and other religious gatherings.

He also advised worshippers to cooperate with security personnel during screening and access control operations, and to report any unattended or suspicious objects immediately.

Additionally, Uba recommended that the public avoid overcrowded areas when possible, remain aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activities to security personnel.

He further advised the public to cooperate with security agencies during stop-and-search operations and to keep a close eye on children, particularly during evening hours and night prayers.

Community leaders, religious authorities, market associations, and transport unions have been urged to support security efforts by sensitizing their members and reporting any suspicious activities, according to Uba.

The JTF spokesperson confirmed that operational readiness has been intensified across the region, with increased patrols, surveillance, and protective measures around critical locations.

Uba reaffirmed the commitment of the security forces to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that public cooperation is crucial in preventing terrorist attacks, and reminding the public that "if you see something, say something" and that security is everyone's responsibility.
