Ex-Imo Governor Achike Udenwa seeks N5 billion in damages from Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged slander.

Former Imo State governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, is seeking N5 billion in damages from Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, over allegedly defamatory comments made on a national television programme.

Udenwa's demand was outlined in a three-page letter, CSAN/GC/26/25, dated June 11, 2026, which was addressed to Okonkwo and signed by his lawyer, Chief Soronnadi A. Njoku, SAN.

The letter expressed regret over Okonkwo's statement, which accused Udenwa of securing money from aspirants through compulsion and violence, and claimed that this statement had greatly injured Udenwa's credit and reputation.

As a result, Udenwa's lawyer instructed Okonkwo to write a strongly worded letter of apology, to be published in five national dailies and aired on Channels Television, within seven days of receiving the letter.

The letter also required Okonkwo to retract his statement and undertake not to defame Udenwa again, in addition to paying N5 billion as compensation for the injuries caused by the alleged defamation.

Failure to meet these demands within the specified timeframe would result in Udenwa's lawyer commencing legal proceedings against Okonkwo in the Imo State High Court to claim the N5 billion in damages and seek injunctive reliefs.
