ESUT imposes N500,000 penalty on reckless driving after final exams

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has imposed N500,000 penalty on any student driving recklessly within and around its premises after completing final examinations.

ESUT’s Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu, made the disclosure on Thursday while addressing members of the university community.

Ugwu said that the measure was part of efforts to curb accidents and protect lives, due to reckless driving from students who celebrate the completion of their final examinations.

“The reckless driving have caused incessant injuries and we urge students to leave quietly after writing their examinations.

n

“Any vehicle impounded over such anomaly will pay N500,000 penalty.

n

“The directive commences from July 31 and is being made to the notice of students who will complete their final examinations then,” he said.

The registrar said that the prohibition remained in force in compliance with the resolution of the Enugu State House of Assembly on such issue.

“The directive has also been earlier conveyed by the state commissioner for education in a memo dated Dec. 20, 2024 and addressed to the institution’s vice-chancellor.

“The university warns that it would not hesitate to take drastic actions against students violating the directive.

n

“Any vehicle impounded for reckless driving wil not be released until the owner pays a penalty of N500,000.

“The student found culpable will face additional disciplinary sanctions in line with the institution’s regulations,” he said.

Ugwu said that the directive mandated all deans, directors and heads of departments to sensitise and warn their final-year students to strictly comply with the directive.

“The institution’s chief security officer and other law enforcement agencies are mandated to be vigilant and ensure that law and order are maintained throughout the university premises.

n

“Members of the university community are enjoined to be guided accordingly and comply fully with the directive.

n

“The university remains resolute to enforce the ban in ensuring the safety of lives and property on campus.”
