Enugu State Government Declares Readiness to Combat Flooding

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State had given the Emergency Management Agency, Enugu SEMA, the green light to conduct a training session for Local Emergency Management Committee members across the state's 17 local governments, focusing on the theme "Building and Strengthening Emergency Resilience in Enugu State", well before the flood prediction and in anticipation of potential disasters.

This move was made in response to the looming threat of flooding, with the training taking place in the first quarter of the year, according to Enugu SEMA head, Mrs. Chinasa Mbah.

Mrs. Mbah revealed that Enugu SEMA collaborated with key stakeholders, including the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and the Red Cross, to implement Community Engagement Programmes, recognizing that community members are often the first to respond in emergency situations, including flooding.

The capacity-building initiative aimed to equip community members with the necessary skills to rescue lives, property, and the economy during flooding and other emergencies, underscoring the notion that disaster management is a collective responsibility.

Furthermore, Enugu SEMA, in partnership with local government chairmen and traditional rulers, launched radio jingles and sensitization programs in high-risk communities to raise awareness about the impending flood incident.

As part of Governor Peter Mbah's development efforts, the state has embarked on a massive road construction project, with each road featuring adequate drainage systems to mitigate the impact of flooding and contain water runoff.

Ultimately, the Enugu State Government, through Enugu SEMA, is working to stockpile relief materials in preparation for the potential flooding, aiming to alleviate its adverse effects on individuals if it occurs.
