Elon Musk proposes to cover pay for American airport screeners

On Saturday, tech mogul Elon Musk made a proposal to cover the salaries of security personnel at US airports amidst a funding dispute over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has resulted in extended wait times at security checkpoints due to unpaid TSA employees.

The lapse in funding has caused TSA employees to work without pay since mid-February, leading to longer lines at airport security checks, affecting many Americans nationwide.

Musk took to X to express his willingness to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during the funding impasse, stating his desire to alleviate the negative impact on Americans at airports across the country.

The TSA, operating under the DHS, has a workforce of approximately 65,000 employees, according to its website, with an estimated annual payroll ranging from $2.5 billion to $3 billion.

Democrats in Congress are refusing to approve new funding for DHS until changes are made to the immigration enforcement tactics of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), another agency under the DHS umbrella.

Since the shutdown began on February 14, over 300 TSA employees have left the agency, and unscheduled absences have more than doubled, according to the DHS and US media reports.

TSA staff are facing significant financial hardship, with some taking on second jobs or relying on donations, while major airports are collecting gift cards and stocking food pantries to support unpaid TSA personnel, as reported by union officials.

Democratic lawmakers are demanding restrictions on ICE patrols, a ban on face masks for ICE agents, and a requirement for judicial warrants before entering private property as conditions for approving DHS funding.

The controversy surrounding ICE has been exacerbated by the killing of two American citizens during protests against aggressive ICE raids in Minneapolis in January, which led to the dismissal of homeland security chief Kristi Noem by Trump.
