Ekiti traders decry rising cost of goods, seek government intervention

ADO-EKITI — Traders in Ekiti State have expressed concern over the rising cost of goods and its impact on businesses, urging governments at all levels to introduce measures to ease the economic burden on traders and consumers.

Speaking with journalists at Bisi Market in Ado-Ekiti, the traders appealed for increased government support to improve business activities and the welfare of residents.

A boutique operator, Mr. Olaniyi Ayodele, acknowledged the Ekiti State Government’s efforts to promote local businesses but said additional interventions were needed to address the challenges confronting traders and their families.

He attributed the persistent increase in the prices of goods and commodities to rising transportation costs and the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

“The continuous increase in the prices of goods and commodities is becoming a major concern. High transportation costs and the impact of the fuel subsidy removal have made it increasingly difficult for both business owners and consumers,” he said.

Another trader, Mrs. Tayo Ibidun, said many items that were once affordable had become significantly more expensive, affecting both traders and customers.

According to her, the prevailing economic situation has also altered consumers’ buying habits, with many opting to shop closer to their homes to reduce transportation costs.

“People are now more careful with their spending because of the rising cost of living, and that has affected the volume of sales for many traders,” she said.

The traders noted that market patronage had declined compared to previous years, leading to reduced sales and lower business turnover.

They called on the government, relevant agencies and other stakeholders to provide palliatives, soft loans and transportation support to help cushion the effects of the economic hardship and stimulate commercial activities in markets across the state.
