Ekiti State's PDP calls for president's involvement in addressing alleged mistreatment of party faithful

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to safeguard the rights of all political actors as the 2026 governorship election approaches, with the party expressing concerns over the treatment of its members by security agencies.

During a press briefing in Ado-Ekiti, PDP officials voiced their worries about the alleged mistreatment of some of their members, with the party's deputy governorship candidate, Deji Ogunsakin, calling on security agencies to maintain their professionalism and impartiality.

Ogunsakin also appealed to political stakeholders to foster a peaceful and democratic environment ahead of the election, while emphasizing that the PDP remains committed to its political activities and voter engagement across the state.

Furthermore, Ogunsakin urged President Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief, to continue upholding democratic principles and ensuring equal protection under the law for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.

Sanya Atofarati, the PDP's South-West Zonal Publicity Secretary, highlighted the importance of protecting democratic freedoms and maintaining a level playing field for all political parties, calling on authorities to ensure that political activities are conducted in accordance with the law and democratic norms.

Meanwhile, Sunday Ashana, the Chairman of the PDP in Ikere Local Government Area, sought clarification on the reported detention of some party members during a recent security operation, appealing for due process and transparency in handling such matters.

In response to the PDP's concerns, Yinka Oyebode, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Biodun Oyebanji, denied any involvement by the state government in the actions complained of by the PDP, stating that the Oyebanji administration is committed to inclusive governance and respects the rights of opposition parties.

Oyebode also emphasized that security agencies are working to address security challenges in the state, and that the government does not interfere with law enforcement agencies or judicial processes, as political parties begin preparations for the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State.
