Ekiti Elections: INEC Removes More Than 2,000 Individuals with Multiple Registrations

The Independent National Electoral Commission has identified and invalidated 2,103 voter registrations that constitute double registration, ahead of the Ekiti State Governorship Election set to take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

INEC's preparations for the poll are proceeding smoothly, with the Commission expressing overall satisfaction with its current state of readiness, according to INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN.

The Register of Voters for the election currently stands at 1,059,360 registered voters, which includes 66,664 new voters added during the first and second phases of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise to the initial 2023 register of 987,647 voters.

Prof. Amupitan disclosed that the Commission had taken steps to maintain the integrity of the Register by invalidating the 2,103 registrations identified as cases of double registration.

A high-level delegation, led by Prof. Amupitan, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the Commission's preparedness for the election in Ekiti State and returned with a positive assessment of the situation.

Prof. Amupitan reported that logistics arrangements, election technology deployment, training of election officials, and stakeholder engagements are all progressing according to schedule.

The Commission remains committed to the simultaneous opening of all 2,445 polling units across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state at 8:30 a.m. on Election Day, according to Prof. Amupitan.

Prof. Amupitan commended participating political parties for signing a Peace Accord ahead of the poll, but cautioned that the accord must be more than a symbolic gesture.

He urged political parties to ensure that the principles of the Peace Accord are fully internalized and observed by party officials, candidates, agents, and supporters throughout the electoral process.

On Saturday, June 20, 2026, the Commission will also conduct bye-elections in six constituencies, including Enugu North Senatorial District, Nasarawa North Senatorial District, and Rivers South East Senatorial District.

The bye-elections will also take place in Ondo South Senatorial District, Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, and Zuru State Constituency of Kebbi State, with the same operational standards and security arrangements as the Ekiti governorship election.

Prof. Amupitan reminded party leaders that the same technological safeguards and security arrangements deployed for the Ekiti governorship election will apply to all six bye-elections.

Regarding the Osun State Governorship Election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, Prof. Amupitan urged all political parties to comply strictly with the prescribed timelines and regulatory requirements.

The lessons learned from the Ekiti election will be used to further strengthen the Commission's preparations and enhance the efficiency of its operations in Osun State, according to Prof. Amupitan.
