Eid-el-Kabir Celebrations: Federal Road Safety Corps Mobilizes More Than 30,000 Staff for Countrywide Enhanced Enforcement Operation

The Federal Road Safety Corps has launched a nationwide special patrol operation in anticipation of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, deploying over 30,000 personnel to ensure safe roads and smooth travel across the country.

This operation, which commenced on May 25 and will run until May 31, 2026, aims to reduce road accidents, traffic congestion, and fatalities associated with increased vehicle movement during festive periods, according to Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri.

The special operations will focus on maintaining traffic flow, managing identified black spots, responding to emergencies, clearing obstructions, and enforcing traffic regulations on major highways nationwide.

To achieve this, the FRSC has deployed patrol vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks, motorcycles, radar guns, breathalysers, and other equipment to strategic locations across the country.

All Zonal Commanding Officers, Sector Commanders, and Unit Commanders have been directed to maintain aggressive visibility patrols and ensure full operational coverage throughout the exercise.

Enforcement efforts will target offences such as excessive speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, overloading, and use of mobile phones while driving, among others.

Mobile courts will operate nationwide during this period to facilitate the speedy prosecution of traffic offenders, while emergency rescue teams are on maximum alert.

Patrol operations will run on a shift basis to guarantee 24-hour monitoring of major highways, with night rescue teams stationed at designated operational commands nationwide.

Key corridors listed for intensive patrol include the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi route, and the Okene-Ogori-Owo route, among others.

The FRSC will collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other agencies to strengthen traffic management and emergency response during the festive period.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has urged motorists to avoid excessive speed, dangerous overtaking, and overloading, and to cooperate with personnel deployed on highways.

Motorists are also encouraged to use the FRSC emergency number 122 and National Traffic Radio 107.1FM to report emergencies.

A Federal High Court has dismissed a ₦950 million fundamental rights suit filed against the FRSC, upholding the conduct of its personnel in a case marked FHC/PH/FHR/447/2022.

The suit was instituted by Barrister Osita Nnadozie against the FRSC Sector Commander in Rivers State and eight others, but the court ruled that the applicant failed to provide credible evidence proving any violation of his fundamental rights.

The matter stemmed from an enforcement operation on October 2, 2022, along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, where the applicant was intercepted for alleged seatbelt violation and failure to stop for lawful checks.

Evidence presented before the court showed that the applicant allegedly accelerated toward an FRSC marshal, forcing the officer to jump into a nearby bush before being apprehended and booked for traffic offences.

The court considered allegations surrounding the applicant’s presence at the Isiokpo Unit Command premises after official working hours on October 5, 2022, where he was reportedly found taking photographs.

The FRSC's legal team successfully demonstrated that the actions of personnel were lawful, professional, and guided by security and safety considerations, leading to the dismissal of the applicant's claims.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has reaffirmed the FRSC's commitment to professionalism, fairness, respect for human rights, and road user safety, warning against attempts to obstruct lawful enforcement operations.
