Eid-el-Fitr: FG Urged to Take Swift Action to Mitigate Inflation's Adverse Impact on Employees, Says SSANU

As Nigerian Muslims celebrate Eid-el-Fitr alongside the global community, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) is urging the government to take concrete steps to mitigate the effects of inflation on workers. This call to action seeks to provide tangible relief through enhanced welfare, wage adjustments, and economic measures that restore dignity to labor.

SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim extended felicitations to association members, the Muslim Ummah, and all Nigerians, particularly Muslims, on the successful completion of Ramadan. He commended the discipline, resilience, and strength demonstrated during the sacred period, deeming it worthy of deep admiration.

Comrade Ibrahim, who also serves as the National Internal Auditor of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising SSANU and the Non-Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), praised the act of abstaining from food and water for extended periods as a profound act of devotion. He expressed hopes that Allah would reward these sacrifices abundantly and accept them as sincere worship.

Across the nation's universities and communities, SSANU members have shown remarkable resilience and dedication despite mounting economic pressures. The rising cost of living, driven by persistent inflation, has placed a heavy strain on workers and their families, with many doing more with less while remaining committed to sustaining the institutions that shape the nation's future.

The union acknowledges these sacrifices but emphasizes that they must not be taken for granted. Therefore, SSANU is calling on the Federal Government to urgently hasten the conclusion of the ongoing renegotiation process with SSANU/NASU in a manner that reflects sincerity, fairness, and recognition of the central role university workers play in national development.

Prolonged delays in the renegotiation process only deepen uncertainty and erode confidence. The union urges the government to take deliberate and practical steps to cushion the harsh effects of inflation on Nigerian workers, ensuring that policies translate into real relief through improved welfare and economic measures.

Comrade Ibrahim extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Maiduguri and those affected by the recent tragic bombings, mourning with the families who have lost loved ones and standing in solidarity with the injured or displaced. He prayed that Almighty Allah grants the departed souls eternal rest, comforts the bereaved, and brings healing and peace to all those affected.

The SSANU President contended that the season calls on Nigerians to strengthen the bonds that unite them, sharing a common purpose to build a just, stable, and prosperous Nigeria. He emphasized the need to uphold the principles of unity, discipline, and collective progress that define the union.
