Edo Queens clinch second NWFL premiership title, secure continental ticket

Edo Queens have been crowned champions of the 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership after finishing top of the Super Six playoffs in Port Harcourt.

The Benin City-based side sealed the title on the final day of the competition following a goalless draw against defending champions Bayelsa Queens at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Saturday. The result saw Edo Queens finish with 10 points from five matches, enough to reclaim the league crown.

The triumph marks the club’s second NWFL Premiership title and secures Nigeria’s slot in the upcoming WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifiers.

Edo Queens are expected to compete in Burkina Faso from August 13 to September 5 for a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

Head coach Moses Aduku also etched his name into the history books, becoming the first manager to win three NWFL Premiership titles within five seasons. Aduku previously guided Bayelsa Queens to the title in 2022 before leading Edo Queens to championship success in 2024 and again this season.

Edo Queens’ journey to the title was far from straightforward. They suffered a 1-0 defeat to Nasarawa Amazons in their opening Super Six fixture but bounced back impressively with a 4-1 victory over FC Robo Queens and a commanding 6-2 win against Abia Angels.

Forward Chioma Moses played a key role in both victories, helping her side regain momentum in the title race.

A crucial 2-1 comeback victory over hosts Rivers Angels on Matchday Four ultimately proved decisive. Goals from Precious Oscar and Chioma Moses overturned a second-half equaliser and put Edo Queens firmly in control of the championship race heading into the final round.

Bayelsa Queens finished runners-up, two points behind the champions, while Nasarawa Amazons claimed third place with eight points. Abia Angels impressed on their Super Six debut, finishing fourth with six points. Rivers Angels and FC Robo Queens occupied fifth and sixth positions, respectively.

Individual honours were also handed out at the end of the season. FC Robo Queens midfielder Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named Player of the Season, while Abia Angels goalkeeper Fatima Oloko emerged Goalkeeper of the Season.

The Golden Boot award was shared by Rivers Angels striker Abasiofon Uwah and Edo Queens forward Atume Doosuur, who both finished the campaign with 13 goals.
