Edo Chapter of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists Calls for Backing of Senior Citizen Care Initiatives

The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists has issued a call to action, urging individuals, corporate organisations, and government institutions to prioritise the care and welfare of the elderly, with the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Edo State, Comrade Habiba Sam, making the appeal during a visit to the Catholic Home of the Elderly.

The visit to the facility, located at St. Paul’s Catholic Church on Airport Road in Benin City, was part of the association's activities to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, with the theme "Give to Gain" guiding their efforts.

During the visit, the association presented food items and toiletries to the residents of the facility, with Comrade Sam stating that the gesture was intended to demonstrate love and compassion to elderly members of society, particularly those residing in care homes.

Comrade Sam expressed her pleasure at being able to celebrate International Women's Day with the residents, acknowledging that they may not often receive visitors, and hoped that the visit would bring hope and fond memories to the elderly individuals.

In response to the visit and donation, caregiver Mrs. Rose John, speaking on behalf of the Directress of the home, Rev. Sister Gloria Ochei, expressed gratitude to the association and appealed for their help in raising awareness about the facility and its needs.

Mrs. John requested that the women journalists utilise their professional platforms to spread the message about the existence of the home and the care provided to its residents, while also thanking the association for selecting the facility as part of their International Women's Day activities.

The caregiver also noted that the Archbishop of Benin currently sponsors the welfare of the residents, including medical care, but emphasised the need for additional support from well-meaning Nigerians.

An emotional moment during the visit occurred when the eldest resident, 111-year-old Mrs. Comfort Solomon, offered prayers and blessings for the journalists in appreciation of their kindness.

The donated items, which included foodstuffs and toiletries, are expected to provide additional comfort and support for the residents of the home, further enhancing their care and welfare.
