Ebonyi electoral body warns against violence, cautions parties ahead of local government polls

The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) has urged political parties contesting the August 22 local government chairmanship and councillorship elections to avoid violence, thuggery, and any action that could undermine the electoral process.

Chief Collins Agbo, EBSIEC Commissioner in charge of Information, Voter Education, and Publicity, issued the warning while speaking with journalists at his office in Abakaliki. He disclosed that open public campaigns officially began on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, and will run until 24 hours before the election day.

Agbo called on parties to conduct issue-based campaigns and ensure voters participate peacefully. “Any activity that threatens the smooth conduct of the local government polls will not be tolerated,” he warned, stressing that elections should not be treated as “do or die” affairs.

The Commissioner also assured residents that EBSIEC has put in place robust mechanisms to guarantee the credibility of the electoral process. He emphasized that the commission remains apolitical and will carry out its constitutional duties without fear or favor.

Agbo further noted that the commission has published the names of all candidates submitted by political parties, encouraging them to campaign openly and seek the support of the electorate.
