Dozens presumed killed after vessel with females, minors on board overturns in Jigawa

A devastating canoe accident in Jigawa State's Ringim Local Government Area has left at least 40 women and children feared dead, following the vessel's capsizing while conveying passengers.

The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident on Monday, revealing that search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing passengers.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the police command disclosed that one body has been recovered, with efforts ongoing to recover the remaining 39 victims, as stated: "One of the bodies was recovered, efforts to recover the 39 are underway."

Muhammad Sanusi, Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, also confirmed the incident, noting that the victims were primarily female farmers and agricultural workers traveling in the canoe when the accident occurred.

According to Sanusi, the exact cause of the boat mishap has not been determined, and emergency officials, local divers, and community members are working together to search for possible survivors and victims.

Sanusi explained that authorities are still working to determine the actual number of people on board and the number of casualties recorded, with efforts underway to establish these details, as he stated: "Hands are on deck as combined efforts continue to determine the exact number of those rescued or missing."

The incident has raised concerns over the recurrence of boat accidents in parts of northern Nigeria, where waterways serve as a primary means of transportation for many rural communities.
