Doku returns to Belgian national team following birth of his child

Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has rejoined the national team camp in Seattle after temporarily leaving the squad to witness the birth of his first child, Praise.

The return of the Manchester City forward was confirmed in a now-viral video released by the Belgian Football Federation, revealing that the 24-year-old returned to the United States on Wednesday after spending time with his family in London following the baby’s arrival.

Doku had missed Belgium’s goalless draw against Iran on Sunday after battling a respiratory illness. Following several days of medical treatment, he was cleared by team doctors to travel and be present for the birth of his son.

Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene said the winger was able to make the trip without any health concerns and was accompanied by medical staff throughout the journey.

“Everything went perfectly, and the mother, father and baby are all doing wonderfully,” Hacene said.

Doku’s return comes as Belgium prepares for a decisive Group G encounter against New Zealand on Saturday. The Red Devils have drawn their opening two matches and must secure all three points to maintain hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 24-year-old’s brief absence also sparked debate in France after television commentator France Pierron questioned his decision to leave the tournament for the birth of his child. The remarks drew widespread criticism, prompting French sports daily L’Equipe to issue an apology and distance itself from the comments.

With Doku now back in camp, Belgium will hope the winger can provide the attacking spark needed in a must-win fixture against New Zealand.
