Dispatch rider dies in Lagos accident

One person died in a multiple road traffic accident involving two trucks and a dispatch rider at Ijesha, inward Mile 2, Lagos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu.

The statement was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu said LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team responded promptly after receiving a distress call on the accident.

He said the accident involved a FAW truck with registration number T-30364LA, an Iveco truck, KSF 958 XV, and a dispatch rider.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that reckless driving and wrongful road use by the truck drivers caused the accident.

He said the FAW truck hit the Iveco truck while both drivers were allegedly struggling for right of way.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the Iveco truck subsequently struck the dispatch rider from behind, resulting in his death.

He said officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Okota Division evacuated the deceased’s remains to the morgue for identification and further necessary procedures.

The permanent secretary said the two trucks were moved to a designated layby off the main carriageway to restore normal traffic flow.

He said the operation involved personnel of LASEMA and the Nigeria Police Force and was successfully concluded.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the road had since been declared safe for motorists and other road users.

He commiserated with the family of the deceased dispatch rider and prayed for the repose of his soul.

The permanent secretary reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to the safety of all road users, particularly dispatch riders and pedestrians.

He urged commercial drivers to desist from reckless driving, wrongful overtaking and dragging for lanes.

He said strict adherence to traffic regulations remained essential to preventing avoidable loss of lives on Lagos roads.

Oke-Osanyintolu reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to prompt emergency response and inter-agency collaboration to safeguard lives and property across the state.
