Diomaye Faye of Senegal Takes Helm as New Leader of ECOWAS

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, marking a new era for the regional bloc.

This development occurred during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, which took place in Sierra Leone, where Faye emerged as the new leader.

He succeeds Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who had assumed the position in June 2025, following the completion of President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as chairman.

Tinubu had formally handed over the leadership of the bloc to Bio during the 67th Ordinary Session, which was held in Abuja.

Faye’s election comes at a critical time for the West African regional body, as it continues to face rising insecurity, democratic challenges, and strained relations with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

These three countries recently withdrew from ECOWAS, adding to the complexity of the regional landscape that Faye will now navigate as chairman.

As the new chairman, Faye is expected to prioritize efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and maintain diplomatic engagement with the breakaway states to preserve stability across West Africa.
