DHL, SON, NAQS, and NESREA Introduce Electronic Submission of Cargo Documents on the Nigeria Single Window Platform

A significant breakthrough has been achieved in Nigeria's trade modernization efforts, as DHL, in collaboration with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, has successfully initiated the electronic submission and transmission of cargo manifests on the National Single Window platform.

This development marks a major milestone in Nigeria's quest to digitize its trade ecosystem, following the official launch of the platform, with stakeholders from both the government and private sectors witnessing the system's capabilities at a live demonstration held at DHL's Lagos Airport facility and the NSW operations hub in Apapa.

Despite initial minor technical issues and temporary network latency, the system demonstrated its resilience and readiness, processing cargo documentation in real-time, transmitting data seamlessly, and generating rotation numbers with precision, thereby reinforcing confidence in its capabilities.

Tola Fakolade, the Director of the NSW project, stated that the initiative has transitioned from the development phase to full-scale operations, declaring "this is no longer a concept, it is live, active, and delivering results," and highlighting the platform's core capabilities, including electronic submission, transmission to border systems, and rotation number generation.

Fakolade emphasized the critical role of collaboration in driving the project forward, noting that while initial challenges may arise, technical teams are in place to resolve them, and urged stakeholders to remain patient and committed as the system scales, citing the typical teething challenges associated with major digital transformations globally.

Oluyomi Adebakin, the Deputy Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, described the NSW Go-live as a landmark success of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, aimed at empowering the trade community, and assured stakeholders that integrated technical teams are working to ensure seamless functionality.

Adebakin highlighted the broader economic implications, noting that the NSW, in conjunction with the B'Odogwu system, will significantly improve efficiency for traders and unlock measurable gains for the Nigerian economy, thereby underscoring the platform's potential impact.

Abubakar Dantsoho, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, represented by General Manager Oladapo Fatai, described the initiative as a transformational leap for port operations, which will drastically reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and eliminate the need for port users to shuttle between multiple offices for documentation.

Lekan Thomas, the Director of Cargo Development and Services at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, projected significant gains in cargo efficiency, security, and data-driven planning, emphasizing that the platform will tackle longstanding inefficiencies in cargo handling while reducing dwell time, a critical factor in improving Nigeria's logistics competitiveness.

Muyiwa Adejeyoju, the Managing Director of DHL, expressed pride in the company's early adoption of the platform, noting that the initiative aligns with DHL's global mission of connecting people and improving lives, while reaffirming the company's commitment to regulatory compliance and trade facilitation.

With the successful completion of its first transactions, the National Single Window marks the beginning of a new era, characterized by speed, transparency, coordination, and global competitiveness, signaling a significant shift in Nigeria's trade value chain.
