Delta Police apprehend female suspect accused of kidnapping two infants

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have apprehended a woman, identified as Joy, who is accused of abducting two babies in separate incidents that occurred in Ughelli, Delta State.

The arrest was disclosed by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a video shared on social media, where he revealed that the suspect was caught after allegedly taking the children from their caregivers.

Investigations into the matter, as stated by Edafe, showed that a four-month-old baby was taken by the suspect after she approached the child's mother, pretending to buy groundnuts, and then distracted the caregivers before leaving with the infant.

This incident prompted the family to launch a search for the missing child, according to Edafe, who also disclosed that the suspect had used a similar tactic in an earlier incident.

In the previous incident, the suspect allegedly befriended a young mother who sold tickets by the roadside, and during one of her visits, she offered to help carry the woman's baby before disappearing with the child.

Edafe stated that the suspect's arrest followed investigations into these incidents, and during her statement to the police, she claimed to have experienced family challenges related to childbirth.

Specifically, the suspect alleged that she had recently lost a set of twins shortly after delivery, and as a result, she took the children because she was struggling to explain the loss of her babies to her husband and relatives ahead of a planned child dedication ceremony.

Police investigations are currently ongoing, with efforts being made to reunite the children with their families and conclude the necessary legal processes, according to the police.
