Delta Daylight Tragedy: Grief-Stricken Mother Asks What She Did to Deserve Police Taking Her Two Sons' Lives

The killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman on April 26 in Delta state has been described as "unexplainable" by the police, with lawyers and civil society demanding justice in the court of law.

The incident has sparked outrage among citizens, and for the Ogidi family, it is a case of affliction striking twice, as the police had previously killed another member of their family in 2022.

Ogidi's mother, Mrs Campaign Stella Ogidi, is struggling to come to terms with the loss of her two children, and she lamented, "What have I done to the Police? Two of my children have been killed by the police.

Victory, the elder brother of the deceased, added that the extrajudicial killing of his brother by the police in 2022 led to their father's death a month later, and he is now seeking justice for his family.

A viral video of the incident, which shows Ogidi begging for his life while restrained on the ground, may be the key piece of evidence to prove the case of extrajudicial killing, and without it, the police may have been able to twist the narrative.

The video footage, which was shared by an unidentified resident, shows ASP Usman and his team in mufti, with Usman wielding an AK-47 rifle, and Ogidi pleading for his life, saying "Please don't kill me, Officer, I will tell you everything.

Usman's actions have been widely condemned, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta Command, SP Edafe Bright, said that the instructions given to Usman were clear: to bring the suspect in, not to kill him.

SP Bright wondered why Usman would shoot an unarmed suspect who was already tied up and begging for his life, and he stated that the police authority could have twisted the narrative if not for the video evidence.

The park authority had alerted ACP Shaba that they had found a barreta pistol and four rounds of ammunition in a consignment that was way-billed through the park logistics desk, and Ogidi had come to pick up the consignment.

However, the narrative of the movement of the parcel has been disputed, with SP Bright's account suggesting that Ogidi visited the park to send the consignment, while the video footage and park operators' report indicate that he went to pick it up.

A security expert has noted that parcel screening is usually done at the point of shipping or sending, not at the point of pickup, and that the park authorities' discovery of the pistol is not adding up.

The expert stated that the receiver of the parcel is supposed to show up, present identification, and pick up the consignment without going through any harassment, and that a lot needs to be done to unravel the secrets that Usman was desperate to hide.

ASP Usman's character has been called into question, with a social media outcry from a lady claiming that he extorted N50,000 from her in 2023 for perceived indecent dressing, and SP Bright said that before this incident, there was no record of such behavior from Usman.

Senior Advocate Kunle Edun has offered to provide legal representation pro bono in the fight for justice for the deceased and his family, and he suspects that Usman may have acted under inducement by other conspirators who pushed him into the unwarranted killing.

Edun stated that the murder is suspicious and that it may have been done to cover up the identity of the owner of the gun or other things that are not known, and he described the killing as "dastard, brutal, and reckless".

Activist Omoyele Sowore and rights lawyers Marshall Abubakar are among those who are not buying the narrative that the killing was an isolated incident, and they point to a history of extrajudicial killings by the police.

Sowore noted that the police didn't know who took the video of the incident, otherwise they could have killed the person as well, and that the only reason the incident gained prominence was because of the unsung hero who recorded it and shared it.

Oliver Fejiro recalled a similar incident where an officer who led and personally shot six people in Abuja was promoted to the rank of AIG, and he stated that the police are not alone in the business of extrajudicial killings.

A soldier had killed a 13-year-old boy, Timothy Daniel Monday, in Akwa Ibom state, just minutes before the crossover into 2026, and another soldier had stabbed Oghenekaro Ugochukwu Bonny to death in Delta State on October 12, 2025.

Usman and his team have been dismissed from the police force after preliminary investigations, and they will be handed over for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting, as part of the new Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunju Disu's efforts to ensure discipline and professionalism in the police force.
