Delicate PDP peace pact holds: National convention to proceed as planned, unfazed by legal warnings from Wike faction

The Peoples Democratic Party's National Caretaker Working Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to holding the 2026 National Convention as scheduled, despite reported court threats and internal divisions, with the party leadership backed by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The convention, which will proceed as planned, is seen as a defining moment that will reaffirm the PDP's unity, legality, and readiness for the 2027 general elections, according to the party leadership.

Spokesman of the NCWC, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, stated that all arrangements have been concluded and the exercise will be credible, transparent, and in line with the law, at a press briefing in Abuja.

He emphasized that the convention marks a moment that reaffirms the PDP's democratic ideals, respect for due process, and dedication to the will of the people, and assured that it will be conducted in full compliance with the party's constitution and relevant laws.

Jungudo dismissed speculations about possible court action, stating that the party had not been served with any legal notice, and confirmed that the convention will go ahead as scheduled on March 29.

The NCWC also distanced its process from that of a rival faction allegedly backed by Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, insisting that its own convention has firm legal backing.

The party acknowledged internal disagreements but downplayed the crisis, describing it as normal in a large political family, with Jungudo noting that even within an extended family, not everyone can be expected to be on the same page.

Reconciliation remains open, but the party's direction will not be stalled, with Jungudo stating that anyone who feels aggrieved and chooses not to align with the party is within their constitutional rights.

Jungudo dismissed allegations of lack of transparency in the nomination process, suggesting that media organisations unaware of the process may not be well-informed.

The FCT Minister's role in providing an enabling environment for the exercise was acknowledged, with Jungudo stating that the party has complied with all regulations and processes and is fully compliant.

No fewer than 2,500 delegates have arrived in Abuja for the convention, as the party vows to use the 2027 general elections to demonstrate its political strength.

Minister Nyesom Wike, after inspecting facilities at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, stated that the PDP is poised to "shock Nigerians" with its performance at the polls and dismissed legal challenges from the Tanimu Turaki group.

Wike noted that the party is a large and accommodating entity, with room for everyone, and acknowledged that grievances are inevitable in any group, but emphasized the importance of the party's overall interest.

The party has concluded arrangements to ensure a smooth leadership transition, with Wike disclosing that positions have been zoned, including the presidency to the South and chairmanship to the North.

Wike expressed satisfaction with preparations, stating that the party is almost fully set for the exercise, with seating arrangements completed and the VIP section ready, and expects no more than 2,500 delegates.

The National Convention is scheduled to hold on March 29 and continue on March 30.
