Defence Headquarters reaches out to retired soldiers on benefits and civic duties

The Defence Headquarters has brought together leaders of military veterans' associations for a day-long strategic retreat, aiming to bolster cooperation on welfare, unity, and national service for veterans, under the guidance of Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, in partnership with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers' Association of Nigeria.

This collaborative effort, held in Abuja, was facilitated by the Defence Headquarters and RANAO, with the goal of fostering a stronger sense of community among military veterans.

A statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, on Tuesday, highlighted the significance of the meeting as a platform for open dialogue and reaffirmed commitment to addressing the concerns of retired military personnel.

Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam emphasized that sustained engagement is key to resolving the concerns raised by military veterans, underscoring the importance of ongoing communication.

Gen. Olufemi Oluyede reaffirmed that the welfare of retired personnel remains a top priority for the Defence Headquarters, with current efforts focused on implementing the recently approved salary increase and corresponding pension adjustments.

Oluyede expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his dedication to enhancing the welfare of Nigerian Armed Forces members, acknowledging the president's commitment to improving their well-being.

The Chief of Defence Staff urged veterans to remain patient as the relevant processes are being completed, assuring them that the Defence Headquarters will continue to pursue improved healthcare, prompt pension payments, and enhanced welfare packages.

Oluyede also encouraged retired military personnel to uphold the values of discipline, loyalty, and patriotism that defined their service years, promoting a sense of continuity and shared purpose.

The retreat emphasized the need for stronger cooperation among veterans' associations, encouraging retired personnel to contribute actively to national development and mentor younger generations.

Furthermore, participants were urged to support initiatives that promote national unity, peace, and security, fostering a sense of collective responsibility among military veterans.
