Day 24 of Ramadan Insights: Identifying the Night of Power

Lailatul Qadr, the Night of Decree, is a blessed night when Allah's mercy is bestowed abundantly, and destinies for the coming year are decreed, with sins being forgiven in the process.

This night is shrouded in mystery, with its exact date unknown, but the Qur'an and Hadith offer guidance to believers to identify and seek its immense blessings.

The Qur'an describes Lailatul Qadr as a night that surpasses a thousand months in value, stating: "Indeed, We sent it [the Qur'an] down during the Night of Decree, and what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months," (Qur'an 97:1–3).

Scholars and Hadith literature point to several signs that may aid believers in recognizing this night, particularly during the last ten nights of Ramadan, with a focus on the odd nights.

One of the most notable signs is the presence of peace and tranquility, as highlighted by the Prophet Muhammad (s a w), who said: "The night of Lailatul Qadr is a calm night, neither too hot nor too cold, and the sun rises on the next morning without harsh rays," (Muslim, Ahmad).

This serene atmosphere is reflective of the spiritual peace that characterizes the night, often accompanied by a clear and bright sky, and a feeling of tranquility that envelops the earth, signaling Allah's mercy and presence.

Another sign of Lailatul Qadr is the ease with which worship can be performed during the night, as the believer finds that prayers, recitation of the Qur'an, and dhikr flow naturally, accompanied by a strong sense of nearness to Allah.

Lailatul Qadr is also a night when du‘as are accepted in abundance, with the Prophet (s.a.w) advising: "Whoever prays during Lailatul Qadr with faith and hoping for reward, all his past sins will be forgiven," (Bukhari & Muslim).

Believers are encouraged to increase their Qiyamul-Layl, recitation of the Qur'an, and heartfelt supplications during this night, seeking forgiveness, guidance, relief from hardship, and provision.

Other traditional signs of Lailatul Qadr include a sense of spiritual renewal, humility, and inner light or calmness in the heart, which, although not physical certainties, indicate a heightened receptivity to Allah's mercy.
