The bust led to the arrest of six individuals following several weeks of surveillance, which was launched after a wave of public outcry and viral social media posts exposing the harmful practices.

While addressing journalists in Kano, NAFDAC’s State Coordinator, Mr. Kasim Ibrahim, disclosed that the sting operation was triggered by disturbing online videos and messages showing vendors openly promoting and selling hazardous creams disguised as spa treatments.

“These products weren’t sold in secret—they were aggressively marketed and glamorized, despite containing banned and dangerous ingredients,” Ibrahim said.

He warned that many of the creams promised “quick fixes” but often caused irreversible skin damage, long-term health risks, and even exposure to cancer-causing substances.

“This is not just about appearance. It’s a serious public health issue affecting the wellbeing and dignity of our women and youth who are being misled,” he added.

The agency’s probe involved undercover operatives and mystery buyers who gathered evidence discreetly. With backing from NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement team, several shops were raided, sealed, and samples collected for laboratory analysis.

Among those detained were suspects accused of distributing fake or unregistered cosmetic items. The affected shops will remain closed pending further investigation.

“These offenders weren’t merely violating regulations—they were jeopardizing lives for profit,” Ibrahim emphasized. “NAFDAC will not stand idly by.”

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment, under the leadership of Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, to safeguarding Nigerians from dangerous substances—be it food, drugs, or cosmetics, which often go unchecked despite their widespread use.

Ibrahim also called on citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while commending the media for amplifying awareness and urging continued public support as NAFDAC intensifies its campaign against illegal cosmetic sales nationwide.
