Daddy Freeze explains reason behind donning black attire at Alexx Ekubo's memorial tribute

Media personality Daddy Freeze has come to the defense of his decision to don black attire to the service of songs held in tribute to the late actor Alex Ekubo, emphasizing that the actor's passing should be regarded as a heartbreaking loss rather than an occasion for celebration.

The service of songs, which took place in Lagos on June 10, 2026, was held ahead of Ekubo's funeral, with guests having been instructed to wear white as specified on the event invitation.

Despite the dress code, Daddy Freeze and his wife attended the event clad in black, prompting criticism on social media, which they later addressed during an Instagram Live session.

Daddy Freeze admitted to not adhering to the dress code, attributing it to an honest mistake, stating "Yes I was wrong to have gone with black, but I honestly did not see that part of the invite, my eyes did not go there."

According to Daddy Freeze, he overlooked the section of the invitation that stipulated white attire, explaining that "The dress code was written at the corner of the invite sent to me.

He expressed that he struggled to understand the concept of rejoicing, stating "I didn’t see where they wrote white only, so what I was saying was for me, I don’t see what they were rejoicing, I don’t see what the concept was about."

Daddy Freeze further emphasized that the actor's passing was sorrowful to him, particularly given their age difference, noting "But for me, it was sorrowful because somebody who was that young at least compared to me, he did not meet me in secondary school, my mother’s youngest child is one year old than Alex."

He argued that treating the actor's passing as a celebration of life was difficult for him to accept, given that Ekubo died at a relatively young age, saying "So for me, he was not going to glory, he was a tragic loss until we were able to wrap our head around that."

Daddy Freeze also questioned the notion that Ekubo's death was a necessary or timely one, stating "Yes I agree that he has gone to a better place but I just don’t agree that he needed to go now, neither do I agree with the people that were saying Christ died at 33."

He drew a comparison between Ekubo's life and that of Christ, noting "What Christ achieved at 33, I’m sure Alex would have loved to stay longer to achieve that much, he had no business dying."

Daddy Freeze expressed his skepticism regarding the idea that Ekubo's life was complete, asking "Or do you believe Alex died empty, he has finished his work and earth, do you believe that, can we stop being sentimental and be honest."

The broadcaster attributed his choice of attire to his cultural background, explaining that black is traditionally associated with mourning in his community, saying "The part of Nigeria that I come from, na black or traditional that they wear to funeral, I did not understand the white."

Daddy Freeze reiterated that he had not intended to offend anyone, stating "I just thought that we were mourning, go and look at all the blogs now, they dragged me, and I was not going for a party, in my own mind, white and service of songs did not go together."

He offered an apology to those who may have been offended, saying "I’m very sorry if you feel offended."
