Spain's remarkable defensive display has been lauded by Marc Cucurella, who described it as "incredible" after their 1-0 World Cup final victory over Argentina on Sunday.

n

The winning goal was scored by substitute Ferran Torres in the second period of extra-time, ultimately breaking down a resilient 10-man Argentina side at the MetLife Stadium.

n

Under the guidance of Coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain's team conceded a mere one goal throughout their eight games at the 2026 tournament, setting a new record for the fewest goals conceded by a World Cup-winning team.

n

The sole breach of their defence occurred in the quarter-finals in Los Angeles, where Belgium managed to score against them.

n

Cucurella, who recently completed a transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid, emphasized the importance of a solid defence, stating "When you don’t concede, I think it’s much easier to win".

n

He attributed Spain's defensive success to a collective team effort, explaining "We’ve done an incredible job in that regard all tournament, and not just the defenders and the goalkeeper, because I think it’s a team effort".

n

Cucurella, a 27-year-old left-back, highlighted the value of teamwork and sacrifice, saying "Ultimately it’s about everyone making sacrifices, we attack together and defend together, that’s one of the keys to this team".

n

With their World Cup victory, Spain, who also won the tournament in 2010, can now finally relax and celebrate, according to Cucurella, who said "Now it’s time to celebrate".

n

After spending nearly 50 days in camp, Cucurella believes the team has earned a well-deserved celebration, saying "We came here with a goal, and now it’s time to be together, enjoy every moment, reminisce, and above all, switch off".

n

Cucurella concluded by saying "I think we deserve a good party".
