Countries exempt from visa requirements for Canadian entry in 2026

Canada's immigration authority has revamped its travel guidelines to provide clarity on the entry requirements for international visitors, taking into account their nationality and mode of transportation. The updated framework categorizes global travelers into distinct groups, clearly outlining the documentation needed for entry, including visa-free travel, electronic clearance, and traditional visas.

A select group of individuals is exempt from obtaining a traditional visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada, including United States citizens and lawful U.S. permanent residents holding a valid green card. French citizens who reside in and fly directly from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon also qualify for this exemption.

Diplomatic passport holders and commercial transit flight crews that meet specific operational criteria are also exempt from the traditional visa and eTA requirements. This exemption allows them to enter Canada without securing either document beforehand.

A broader group of countries has been designated for electronic travel, allowing citizens to bypass traditional embassy visas if they travel by air and obtain an online eTA in advance. However, these travelers are not required to secure an electronic permit if they arrive in Canada by land or sea.

The list of countries under the electronic travel framework includes Andorra, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania (for electronic passport holders only), Samoa, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Vatican City State.

A separate category of countries requires a conditional eTA for air travel, provided the traveler holds specific active foreign permits, and includes Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay.
