Concern grows in Benue as locals sound warning over surge in armed cattle grazers

Residents of Logo Local Government Area in Benue state are sounding the alarm over a large-scale influx of armed Fulani herdsmen into the Gaambe-Tiev axis, which is causing heightened tension among the affected communities.

This influx is reportedly accompanied by a significant number of cattle, leading to widespread fear and uncertainty among locals, many of whom rely on farming for their livelihoods.

The situation is precarious, with locals warning that it could escalate if immediate action is not taken to address the issue.

A community source, speaking anonymously on Wednesday, described the situation as troubling and potentially hazardous, stating that the presence of armed men in the area is causing concern among residents.

The source expressed fear about the uncertainty of the situation, saying "The influx of these armed men into our communities is worrisome, and people are living in fear because we do not know what could happen next."

The presence of armed individuals in the area has disrupted daily activities, with many farmers avoiding their farmlands due to safety concerns, which could have serious implications for food production in the area.

Ukange Abogh, a renowned yam farmer in the area, expressed concern over the growing tension, noting that the situation bears similarities to previous incidents that led to violent clashes in parts of the state.

Abogh warned that the situation could lead to a breakdown of law and order, saying "We have seen this pattern before, and it often does not end well, which is why we are calling for urgent intervention."

He appealed to the authorities to take immediate action, stating "Gaambe–Tiev is made up of known agrarian communities that experienced relative calm in recent times, but with this influx, there is fear of possible breakdown of law and order."

Abogh urged the government and security agencies to intervene swiftly, saying "We are calling on the government and security agencies to step in immediately, as their presence will help calm nerves and prevent any form of crisis."
