Commissioner of Police in Federal Capital Territory directs investigation into fatal shooting of Abuja Municipal Area Council tax official

A thorough investigation has been ordered by FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi into the killing of Oladipupo Akinola, a revenue staff member of the Abuja Municipal Council, which occurred last Friday at NITEL Junction in Wuse 2, Abuja.

The directive for the investigation was made known by SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, on Saturday, following reports of the incident.

According to reports, the deceased revenue officer, who worked under the Mobile Advert Permit department of AMAC, was allegedly shot and killed by an NSCDC officer during a routine enforcement operation to identify vehicles in default of the 2026 operational permits.

SP Josephine Adeh stated that the FCT Police Command is aware of the incident and that CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi has ordered a discreet investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identification of the alleged NSCDC officer and all other individuals connected to the matter.

Comrade Shehu Shugaba, director of operations of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, had called on CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi to investigate the killing of Oladipupo Akinola, emphasizing the need for justice for the deceased and his family.

Shugaba explained that the late revenue staff member and his colleagues had stopped a Hilux vehicle at NITEL Junction to verify its operational status, discovering that it was owned by a Chinese company and demanding the 2026 operational permits.

The revenue officers found that the vehicle was carrying 2025 operational permits, which had already expired, leading to the arrest of the vehicle and a subsequent altercation with civil defence officers who arrived at the scene.

During the altercation, one of the civil defence officers shot and killed the AMAC staff, after which the occupants of the vehicle and the civil defence officers quickly drove off without being identified.

Shugaba emphasized that many AMAC revenue officers on Abuja roads are legitimate officers performing their duties, and residents should respect them as they collect revenue for the government.
