Come 2027, SDP, under Gabam's leadership, selects Akeem Atanda to be its standard-bearer in the presidential election

Ahead of the 2027 Presidential and general elections, the Social Democratic Party, led by Shehu Gabam, has selected Abimbola Akeem Atanda as its Presidential candidate, a decision made during the 2026 National Convention/ Presidential Primary at the Bola Tinubu Conference Centre on Wednesday.

This choice was made possible through a voice vote by delegates representing the thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, who gathered at the convention.

The party has taken disciplinary action against several key members, including Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, Dr. Olu Agunloye, and Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, who have been suspended from the National Working Committee, NWC.

Additionally, ten other members have been suspended, namely Adewole Adebayo, Joseph Achile Abu, Maggie Mariam Batubo, Sa’adatu Abdullahi, Abimbola Aderemi, Oguchukwu Uba, Huseesini Bello, Alabi Lekan, Rosemary Effiong, and Abubakar Modibo.

These suspensions were enacted due to findings that the affected individuals acted in ways that contradicted the party's ideals, principles, and constitutional provisions, ultimately undermining party unity and discipline.

The party has called for the approval and ratification of the suspension and expulsion of these members, citing the need to maintain party cohesion.

The SDP convention also ratified Shehu Gabam's nomination as National Chairman, confirming his position alongside other members of the NWC.
