Coalition credits joint security efforts for success of Oriire rescue operation

The Coalition of Civil Rights Groups on Security Sector Reforms has highlighted the successful rescue of 44 pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire, Oyo State, as evidence of enhanced coordination among Nigeria's security agencies, according to a statement made on Monday.

This operation, which was completed around July 10, roughly two months after the victims were taken in May, showcases the benefits of increased collaboration between the military, police, and intelligence agencies in combating violent crime.

Emmanuel Agabi, the National Coordinator of the coalition, acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, in coordinating the rescue effort, and also expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Agabi specifically praised General Olufemi Oluyede for his exceptional leadership in fostering a unified command structure, where the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other services work together as equal partners, marking a significant shift in their approach.

The coalition also recognized the Nigeria Police Force's crucial contribution to the rescue, including providing ground support, conducting investigative work, and engaging with the local community, all of which helped to ensure the operation's success.

Recent security operations in several states have resulted in the rescue of hostages, the neutralization of bandit groups, and the recovery of stolen arms and livestock, demonstrating broader progress in the fight against criminal networks.

According to Agabi, the security agencies' determination has not only led to the rescue of innocent citizens but has also dismantled key components of the criminal networks responsible for these heinous acts.

The coalition welcomed the recent successes achieved by the security agencies but emphasized the need for sustained investment in modern equipment, intelligence gathering, personnel training, civil-military relations, and community policing to effectively tackle insecurity, particularly in areas with limited governance.

The coalition praised President Tinubu for his support of security agencies through improved funding, training, and inter-agency cooperation, and urged the Nigeria Police Force to enhance its forensic investigations and partnerships with local vigilante groups and community security networks.

The coalition reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government efforts to improve national security, underscoring its readiness to collaborate with the authorities to achieve this goal.
