On Wednesday, China expressed its approval of a ceasefire in the Middle East, highlighting its involvement in facilitating an agreement between the United States and Iran to temporarily halt hostilities for a period of two weeks.

Tehran has agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz temporarily, a crucial waterway through which a significant portion of the world's oil, gas, and fertiliser passes, thereby alleviating concerns about the global economy.

The announcement was made just before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, who had previously threatened to take drastic action against Iran if it failed to engage in negotiations.

Trump stated in an interview with AFP on Tuesday that he believed China played a role in bringing Iran to the negotiating table, given its efforts to mediate in the conflict since its onset.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated at a regular news conference on Wednesday that "China welcomes relevant parties announcing the reaching of a ceasefire agreement", without directly addressing Trump's remarks.

Mao Ning noted that China's efforts to resolve the conflict had been ongoing, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi having made 26 calls to counterparts from relevant countries, while Beijing's Middle East envoy had been actively engaged in the war-torn region.

According to Mao Ning, Beijing will "continue to make efforts to ease the situation and achieve a complete end to the war", indicating China's commitment to finding a lasting solution.

The terms of the ceasefire include the United States suspending its attacks on Iran for two weeks, while Iran will temporarily reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as outlined by Washington.

Israel has expressed support for Trump's decision to suspend bombing Iran, but clarified that the ceasefire "does not include Lebanon", highlighting the complexity of the situation.

Iran has proposed a 10-point plan aimed at securing a lasting end to the war, which Trump has described as "workable", offering a potential pathway to a more permanent resolution.
