Cash machine dealings skyrocket by 208% to reach N89 trillion

The value of Automated Teller Machines transactions experienced a significant surge of 208.4 percent year-on-year, reaching N89.12 trillion in 2025, up from N29.12 trillion in 2024, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria's 2025 Annual Report.

This substantial increase in ATM transactions is attributed to shifting user preferences, a growing adoption of digital channels, the expansion of e-commerce, and enhancements to infrastructure, as noted by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

An analysis of retail payments for the review period revealed a 2.62 percent increase in the volume of e-payments transactions, which rose to 47.88 billion in 2025 from 46.65 billion in 2024.

Furthermore, the value of these transactions also saw a notable increase of 26.07 percent, climbing to N4,360.33 trillion in 2025 from N3,458.77 trillion in the preceding year.

A breakdown of transaction volumes by channel showed that ATMs recorded the most significant rise, with a 61.94 percent increase to 1.66 billion, as stated by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Additionally, the volume of transactions through Unstructured Supplementary Service Data and Point of Sale channels increased by 20.89 percent to 669.55 million and 19.78 percent to 15.66 billion, respectively.

In contrast, decreases were observed in the volume of transactions conducted through mobile apps, internet/web, and direct debits, highlighting a shift in consumer behavior.

Despite the overall growth in e-payment transactions, the Central Bank of Nigeria identified systemic risk, the dominance of a few systemically important payment service providers, losses due to fraud, cyber threats, and the activities of unlicensed entities as key risks within the payments system in 2025.
