Born in Ireland to a Cape Verdean father and an Irish mother, Lopes spent his entire professional career in Ireland, starting with Lourdes Celtic and later playing for Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers, where he currently plays, before making the switch to international football.

Lopes initially represented Ireland at the U-19 level, but it was a LinkedIn message from the Cape Verde football association that changed the course of his career, an opportunity he almost missed due to a language barrier.

It took a follow-up message in English, nine months later, for Lopes to realize the opportunity that was being presented to him, and he quickly took action, using Google Translate to understand the original message and respond to the association's proposal.

Lopes recalled the unusual recruitment process, explaining that the association had difficulty contacting his club, but he was immediately on board once he understood the opportunity, and he began working to obtain the necessary documentation to play for Cape Verde.

Lopes made his debut for Cape Verde in 2019, in a 2-0 win over Togo, and has since become a key figure in the team's defence, helping the Blue Sharks qualify for their first-ever World Cup, a historic achievement for one of the smallest countries to ever qualify for the tournament.

Cape Verde's goal, according to Lopes, is to make it out of the group stage, which includes powerhouses Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay, a tough but achievable target, with Lopes emphasizing the need to stay competitive and believe in their abilities.

Lopes noted that while reaching the final may be a lofty goal, the team's immediate focus is on advancing out of the group stage, a challenge they are ready to face head-on, driven by their merit-based qualification and determination to succeed.
