Cancer care: Medserve-LUTH retains Nigeria’s top oncology centre award for 4th straight year

Cancer care in Nigeria received a boost for cancer care in Nigeria, as the Medserve-LUTH Cancer Centre retained its title as the Most Outstanding Oncology Centre in Nigeria for the fourth consecutive year, further cementing its status as a leading cancer treatment hub in West Africa.

The award was conferred at the 12th edition of the Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Award, NHEA, held in Lagos, in recognition of the centre’s sustained excellence in oncology care, innovation, and patient management.

The feat comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with a rising cancer burden and growing calls for stronger local capacity to reduce dependence on medical tourism.

Located within Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the Medserve-LUTH Cancer Centre has emerged as one of the largest and best-equipped oncology facilities in West Africa, offering radiotherapy, chemotherapy and multidisciplinary cancer care under one roof.

Receiving the award on behalf of the centre, Chief Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Muhammed Habeebu, described the recognition as a validation of years of commitment to quality cancer treatment.

“Securing this honour for four years running is a profound validation of our team’s relentless dedication. It reflects our commitment to breaking barriers in cancer treatment, investing in world-class infrastructure, and ensuring that every patient who walks through our doors receives international-standard care right here in Nigeria,” Habeebu said.

He noted that the centre’s model has helped change the face of cancer care in the region by reducing the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for advanced treatment.

According to him, the centre’s integrated approach to oncology care is not only improving treatment outcomes but also shaping the future of cancer survivorship in the country.

“Since inception, the centre has transformed oncology care in West Africa by offering a holistic approach to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and supportive therapies. This recognition confirms that our model of unified, multidisciplinary care is actively rewriting the future of cancer survivorship across the region.”

The event, organised by Global Health Project and Resources in collaboration with Anadach Group, brought together key players in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, attended as Special Guest of Honour, while Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, served as Chief Host.

The award further reinforces the position of Lagos University Teaching Hospital as a leading tertiary health institution in specialised care, research and innovation.
