Canada immigration authorities have reminded prospective immigrants and visa applicants that document fraud is a serious criminal offence, warning that submitting false information could lead to severe penalties, including a five-year ban from entering the country.

The advisory from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stresses that applicants are responsible for ensuring every detail in their application is truthful, even if an immigration representative prepares and submits it on their behalf.

Here are five important things to know about document fraud in Canada:

1. Providing false information is against the law

IRCC says it is illegal to lie or submit false information or documents as part of an immigration application. This offence is known as misrepresentation and can result in serious immigration consequences.

2. Many types of documents can be fraudulently altered

Authorities warn that document fraud is not limited to passports. It can involve falsifying or altering a wide range of documents, including:

• Passports and travel documents

• Visas

• Diplomas, degrees, apprenticeship or trade certificates

• Birth, marriage, divorce, annulment, separation and death certificates

3. You remain responsible for your application

Even if you hire an immigration consultant, lawyer or other representative to complete your application, IRCC says you are legally responsible for every piece of information and every document submitted in your name.

4. False documents can lead to a five-year entry ban

Submitting fraudulent documents or misleading information may result in your application being refused. In addition, Canadian authorities may bar you from entering Canada for at least five years, among other penalties.
