CAF names Samson Adamu interim chief, breaking nearly seven-decade Nigeria representation drought

A historic milestone has been achieved with the appointment of Samson Adamu as the acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, a position that has never been held by a Nigerian since the organisation's establishment in 1957.

This groundbreaking appointment was formally confirmed on Sunday at the CAF congress, which took place at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo, following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, the Swiss-Congolese official who vacated the post on the same day.

Adamu's extensive experience in managing logistics and overseeing major continental competitions, garnered from his previous role as CAF's Director of Tournaments and Events, will undoubtedly be an asset in his new position.

His appointment was facilitated by the CAF Executive Committee, which proposed his name, and subsequently ratified by the congress, thereby solidifying his position as the organisation's top administrative officer.

The role of Secretary General is often regarded as the "engine room" of African football, entailing responsibility for the day-to-day operations of CAF, as well as overseeing legal affairs and ensuring the implementation of executive committee decisions.

With Adamu's appointment, Nigeria has, for the first time in nearly seven decades, assumed a central role in continental football administration.
