BTS's latest record shatters expectations with nearly 4 million copies sold in its debut 24 hours

As the comeback concert of K-pop boy group BTS approaches in downtown Seoul on March 21, 2026, a convenience store near the venue welcomes fans with a banner, capturing the excitement of the event, which was photographed by Jung Yeon-je / AFP.
nBTS's new album "ARIRANG" has achieved remarkable sales, with 3.98 million copies sold in the first day, according to Big Hit Music, citing local album sales tracker Hanteo Chart, following its release on Friday, a day before the highly anticipated concert.
nThe concert, which is expected to draw around 260,000 people to central Seoul, marks the group's return after an almost four-year hiatus, and is likely to be a major money-spinner, potentially surpassing Taylor Swift's earnings.
nThe return of BTS, the world's biggest boy band, is set to generate significant revenue, not just from ticket sales, but also from fans traveling from abroad and spending several days in the cities where the group performs, a phenomenon known as "BTSnomics".
nProjections suggest that the 82-date, 23-country tour could surpass US megastar Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, which reportedly generated around $2 billion in ticket sales alone, with the tour starting in Goyang, South Korea on April 9 and ending in the Philippines 11 months later.
nSooCheong Jang, a tourism professor at Purdue University, expects the economic ripple effects of the tour to be distributed across all the countries and cities where the performances take place, and believes that the impact will indeed surpass that of "Taylornomics".
nAnalyst Kim Yu-hyuk of IBK Investment & Securities in Seoul estimates that ticket sales and merchandise from BTS's 82-date tour could generate at least 2.9 trillion won ($2 billion), with six million people potentially attending the shows, and more dates possibly being announced next year.
nNetflix will livestream the concert around the world, with executive Brandon Riegg stating that it is the biggest live musical performance the platform has ever staged globally, which could further increase the current global demand for Korean content, from movies and TV series to books, food, and cosmetics.
nThe buzz around BTS and K-pop is likely to boost tourism to South Korea, with "KPop Demon Hunters" - Netflix's most-watched original film - recently winning two Oscars and already significantly helping to increase tourism to the country.
nMerchandise, ranging from tuna cans and beauty devices to glow sticks, blankets, clothing, and dolls, is also a significant generator of cash, with Shinsegae Duty Free reporting that sales of BTS merchandise alone rose about 430 percent in the week of March 13-19 from the previous week.
nDal Yong Jin, a culture and digital technology professor at Simon Fraser University, notes that BTS has developed a new economic model for cultural IP, including copyright, trademarks, and design, with their copyright extending to games, comics, music videos, and the sale of merchandise, including dolls.
nSouth Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that the number of foreign visitors to the country between March 1-18 this year rose by more than 30 percent compared with a year earlier, with BTS's agency HYBE citing data showing overseas searches for Seoul jumped 160 percent within 48 hours of the tour announcement.
nGi-Wook Shin, a sociology professor at Stanford University, believes that the group's impact is "measurable in increased tourism to South Korea, the global expansion of K-pop, and spillover effects into industries like K-drama, beauty, cuisine, and fashion", and that BTS has helped catalyze the broader "K-everything" wave, creating both cultural and economic multiplier effects.
