British woman imprisoned for making fabricated sexual assault allegations against multiple online matches

A woman has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for fabricating allegations of rape against 10 men she met on dating apps, with Stacey Sharples, 31, from Farnworth in Bolton, pleading guilty to 10 counts of perverting the course of justice at Bolton Crown Court.

Sharples' false claims led to the arrest of multiple men, police investigations, and intimate examinations, resulting in an estimated £120,000 in wasted resources, with none of the accused men being charged.

The false accusations had a significant impact on the men involved, with one victim being told by Sharples, “I’ve got away with it, yet again,” after police dropped the charges against him.

Greater Manchester Police took the unusual step of pursuing Sharples as a suspect, with Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland explaining that the decision was necessary after the evidence demonstrated the reports were untrue.

Gilliland stated that the police took the allegations seriously and made arrests, but as the evidence showed the reports to be false, it was right to pursue the individual who had actually committed a crime.

Victims of the false accusations, including Reece Lockett, described the devastating impact on their lives, with Lockett saying his life was turned upside down, leading to him being disowned by his parents, losing his partner and job, and experiencing constant stress and anxiety.

Another victim, Connor Austen, also shared his experience, saying Sharples had ruined seven years of his life, resulting in him losing his home, partner, and job.

Police emphasized that the case should not discourage genuine victims from coming forward, with Gilliland stating that no officer intends to pursue the person making a rape report and that survivors will be supported.

The men falsely accused by Sharples continue to deal with lasting emotional and social consequences, but many have expressed relief that justice has finally been served, with the sentence bringing an end to their ordeal.
