Bremen admit Victor Boniface loan ‘hasn’t worked out’

Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has acknowledged that the club’s loan move for Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has failed to deliver the expected results.

Due to injuries and uneven play, Boniface, who joined Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window, has had difficulty making an impression.

Reflecting on the decision, Fritz, while talking to German outlet Mopo, explained that the club knowingly took a financial gamble in hopes of strengthening their attack.

“To take a manageable financial risk and to have the courage to see the opportunity,” he said, describing the reasoning behind the transfer.

He added that the move was also intended to aid the development of young forward Keke Topp while benefiting from Boniface’s experience and quality.

“On the one hand, we wanted to develop Keke, and on the other hand, we also wanted to acquire the quality that Victor undoubtedly possesses,” Fritz noted.

However, he conceded that the plan has not materialised as hoped.

“As things stand now, we have to say that it hasn’t worked out in that form,” he admitted.

The 25-year-old striker endured a difficult spell at the Weserstadion, failing to score in 11 Bundesliga appearances before undergoing knee surgery, further compounding his struggles.

Injuries disrupted his rhythm throughout the campaign, preventing him from building consistency or rediscovering the form that once marked him as one of the league’s most promising forwards.

The former Bayern Leverkusen forward could not make it to the African Cup of Nations last year due to fitness issues but remains hopeful of returning to action before the end of the season as he reaches the final stage of his recovery.
