Breaking: Tinubu Submits Request to Senate for Green Light on $5 Billion Loan

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has submitted a formal request to the Senate for authorization to secure a loan of $5 billion, as outlined in a letter addressed to Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate.

The loan, which is intended to be sourced from Abu Dhabi Bank, is earmarked for covering the budget deficit and debt financing, among other purposes, as specified in the letter that was read during Tuesday's plenary session.

In a separate letter to the Senate, President Tinubu is also seeking approval for a $1 billion UK/EF loan facility from London Citi Bank, which is slated for the rehabilitation of various port projects.

The projects in question include the Lagos Port complex and the Tin Can port, with the overarching objectives of addressing critical deficiencies, enhancing efficiency, and improving safety standards, as well as supporting non-oil trade diversification and positioning Nigeria as a trade hub.

Senator Godswill Akpabio subsequently referred the letters to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, which is led by Senator Aliyu Wammakko, tasking the committee with carrying out the necessary legislative actions and reporting back promptly.
