Borno Authorities Impose Ban on Keke Operations in Anticipation of Eid El-Fitr Celebrations

A temporary restriction has been imposed on the movement of tricycles, also known as Keke Napep, by the Borno State Police Command, effective from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, in specific areas including Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and parts of Jere Local Government Area, as the community prepares to celebrate Eid El-Fitr.

This measure, as announced by ASP Keneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer, is aimed at mitigating potential security threats in the face of rising Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks and recent incidents of suicide bombings, thereby ensuring a peaceful Sallah celebration.

The primary objective of this restriction, as outlined in the statement, is to bolster security coordination, streamline crowd management, and avert any potential dangers that may arise during this period, with the aim of creating a safe environment for all residents.

Residents have been strongly advised to adhere strictly to the directive and attend Eid prayers at the grounds closest to their homes, minimizing the need for movement and reducing the risk of overcrowding in public areas.

In a collaborative effort, police personnel will be working alongside other security agencies to maintain a visible presence at prayer grounds, markets, motor parks, and other locations deemed vulnerable, focusing on crowd control, traffic management, and overall surveillance.

Additionally, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams will be conducting thorough screenings of attendees at major gatherings to further enhance security measures.

Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Abdulmajid has instructed all area commanders, divisional officers, and tactical units to intensify their patrols and intelligence-led operations throughout the festive period, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights during this time.
