Blaze engulfs Ikom Magistrate Court, reducing legal documents to ashes

A devastating fire swept through Magistrate Court 1 in Ikom LGA, Cross River State, on Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, with critical records, exhibits, and ongoing case files reduced to ashes.

The blaze, which erupted around 3:00 a.m. on April 23, 2026, was eventually brought under control by firefighters, but not before it had engulfed the entire facility, according to information gathered by Vanguard.

An eyewitness described the scene as one of utter devastation, with nothing but ashes and debris visible in the aftermath of the inferno, and expressed concern that the loss of files would lead to significant delays and potential miscarriages of justice.

The destruction of the court has left Ikom without a functioning magistrate court, exacerbating existing access issues in the surrounding areas, and raising concerns about the impact on the administration of justice.

ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the fire was being treated as a suspected arson case, and praised the prompt response of police officers and fire service personnel in containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading.

Eitokpah noted that, although the court structure was completely destroyed, fortunately, no lives were lost in the fire, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough and discreet investigation to determine the cause of the fire and identify those responsible.
