Barcelona set 2028 date for Messi tribute at Camp Nou

Barcelona are planning a special tribute for club legend Lionel Messi when the renovated Spotify Camp Nou is completed in 2028.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed the plan, saying the club intends to honour the Argentine star once work on the stadium is completed.

“We are planning for the Leo Messi tribute once the Spotify Camp Nou is completed,” Laporta said during the club’s General Assembly on Saturday.

“It will be a beautiful tribute. We hope to complete the stadium by the start of 2028.”

Messi spent nearly two decades at Barcelona after joining the club as a teenager, becoming the most decorated player in its history and helping the Catalan giants win numerous domestic and European titles.

The 39 year old forward left Barcelona in 2021 after the club was unable to renew his contract and subsequently joined Paris Saint Germain as a free agent.

He later moved to Inter Miami, where he continues to play club football, while he has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina.

Barcelona have continued to maintain their connection with Messi despite his departure, with Laporta now confirming plans to mark his contribution to the club once the redevelopment of Camp Nou is completed.

The tribute is expected to take place after the stadium project reaches completion, with the club targeting the start of 2028 for the return to a fully completed venue.
