Authorities seized 34 illicit firearms in Osun prior to elections – Police Spokesperson

The Nigeria Police Force has successfully recovered 34 illegal firearms in Osun State, ahead of the upcoming governorship election, as announced by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, during a town hall meeting at the Osun State police command headquarters in Osogbo on Thursday.

CSP Iniedu revealed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the sources of the seized weapons, and upon completion, the illegal owners will face prosecution, in accordance with the directives of the Inspector General of Police.

Regarding the recovered arms, CSP Iniedu stated that approximately 34 illicit weapons have been retrieved in Osun State prior to the election, and once the investigation is concluded, those responsible will be held accountable.

CSP Iniedu emphasized that the possession of illicit weapons at polling units is strictly prohibited, and even the four policemen assigned to each unit will not be armed, as mandated by the Electoral Acts.

In addition to uniformed officers, CSP Iniedu explained that plainclothes police officers and other security agents will be deployed to polling units to monitor and profile voters and individuals present at the units.

Prior to the election, the Force PRO had announced that 15,000 policemen have been deployed to the state, and police helicopter and drone units have also arrived to conduct aerial surveillance before, during, and after the election.
