Authorities report N118 billion in prevented damages, N19.72 billion in losses due to Lagos blazes in 2025

The Lagos State government revealed that firefighters successfully prevented a significant loss of property, with N118.32 billion worth of properties saved from fire incidents in 2025, while N19.72 billion worth of properties were lost to fires across the state.

This information was disclosed by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr Olugbenga Oyerinde, during the 2026 ministerial press briefing commemorating the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, held at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Oyerinde, the figures demonstrate the increasing capability of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency response agencies to mitigate fire disasters and reduce economic losses throughout the state.

The commissioner noted that the estimated value of properties saved during the period under review was more than six times the total losses, resulting in a net asset protection value of approximately N98.60 billion.

Oyerinde reported that March 2025 saw the highest value of properties saved, at N12.60 billion, while August recorded the lowest, at N6.78 billion, which he attributed to the decrease in emergency incidents during the peak rainy season.

The commissioner also stated that March witnessed the highest monthly fire-related losses, at N2.10 billion, whereas August recorded the lowest losses, at N1.13 billion.

Furthermore, Oyerinde said that fire calls accounted for 1,685 incidents, representing the vast majority of emergencies handled by firefighters during the year.
