Authorities launch crackdown on cars with dark window films, obscured license plates

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a thorough crackdown on vehicles that flout regulations regarding tinted glass, hidden number plates, and registration requirements, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Mr Ahmed Sanusi.

This enforcement operation was announced by Sanusi during a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, in response to the growing trend of vehicles with tinted windows, covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles being used to commit crimes across the territory.

According to Sanusi, vehicles with tinted windows, covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles are often utilized in "one-chance" robberies, kidnappings, and other illicit activities, as they allow offenders to conceal their identities and avoid detection.

Intelligence reports available to the command have revealed that many criminal elements deliberately exploit such vehicles to hinder law enforcement efforts and compromise public safety, thereby posing a significant threat to the community.

Sanusi emphasized that the operation aims to target vehicles that violate these regulations, and is not intended to cause inconvenience to law-abiding citizens who have obtained legitimate approval to use tints on their vehicles.

The primary objective of this exercise is to deprive criminals of the cover they use to commit crimes against innocent citizens and FCT residents, according to the police commissioner.

Since the commencement of the exercise, over 30 vehicles with illegal tinted glass, concealed number plates, or without proper registration have been impounded by the authorities.

The owners and operators of the affected vehicles will be prosecuted in accordance with the Laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023, as stated by the police commissioner.

Sanusi reaffirmed the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies aimed at safeguarding lives and property in the FCT.

The commissioner appealed to residents for their understanding, cooperation, and support as the command continues to carry out the enforcement operation across the territory.

Furthermore, Sanusi urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious individuals, vehicles, or activities to the nearest police station or through the command's emergency lines.
