Authorities in Lagos uncover bogus abduction scheme orchestrated by junk merchant

The Police Command in Lagos State has made a startling discovery, uncovering a fake kidnapping scheme allegedly masterminded by a scrap iron dealer and his cohorts, in a bid to swindle his employer out of N1.5 million.

The scrap dealer had reportedly staged his own kidnapping, prompting his brother, Abubakar, to report the incident to the police on May 19, at approximately 10 p.m.

Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, revealed the details of the case on Tuesday, while addressing journalists at the command's headquarters in Ikeja, explaining that the initial report sparked an investigation into the alleged disappearance.

A video soon surfaced, appearing to show the purported victim being brutally beaten with planks by unknown individuals, who threatened to kill him unless a ransom of N1.5 million was paid by his employer.

Initially, the case seemed like a legitimate kidnapping, prompting detectives to ramp up their efforts to rescue the victim and apprehend those responsible, but as they delved deeper, they began to suspect that something was amiss.

Upon closer analysis of the video and the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction, investigators noticed inconsistencies, particularly the lack of visible signs of physical assault or torture on the victim after he returned home.

The CP explained that a thorough examination of the video and subsequent investigation revealed several discrepancies, leading detectives to subject the suspect to further questioning, during which he eventually confessed to staging the kidnapping.

According to the commissioner, the alleged victim admitted to conspiring with others, who are currently at large, to fake his own kidnapping, in a shocking twist to the case.

The suspect also confessed to diverting N490,000, which had been given to him for business purposes, and the money was successfully recovered during the investigation.

As part of their efforts to gather more evidence, detectives visited the workshop where the fake kidnapping video was recorded, and the commissioner revealed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects linked to the offence.
